Cold Weather Activities in Toronto

Summer in Toronto is filled with beach days, gorgeous walks and lots of events (see my list of warm-weather activities). But, the romantic snowy streets downtown have their own charm. Cold weather means nights discovering Toronto’s best food, or snowy activities. Here’s a list of my favourite things to do in Toronto when the weather is cold:

Cavalcade of Lights

This event takes place annually at Nathan Phillips Square, and includes live performances, speeches, and the lighting of the Christmas tree outside City Hall. The best way to get there is to walk along the windows of the Hudson’s Bay Company and stop to marvel at the traditional displays which line Queen Street. Dress warm!

Toronto Christmas Market & Holiday Market

The Toronto Christmas Market happens every year in Toronto’s historic Distillery District and has traditional stalls and festive drinks. It is always cold for this market, so dress warm, or curl up by one of the outside wood fires.

This year, there is a new traditional style Holiday Market happening in Nathans Phillips Square- might be worth a peek!

Theatre, Ballet, Opera and Toronto Symphony Orchestra

The Toronto Winter Garden Theatre

One of my favourite things to do in the winter is to go to the theatre. Every winter I make sure to see at least one show (this year I’m seeing Cabaret in February!). Toronto puts on amazing theatre shows , especially Holiday shows!
Also check out the National Ballet of Canada – the Nutcracker is always a festive favourite of mine.
On the to-do list: go to the Opera and check out the Toronto Symphony Orchestra!

Rocky Horror Picture Show: Live Shadow Cast

This may not be for everyone, especially the shy. The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a cult classic, and the Bloor HotDocs Theatre puts on the film with a live shadow cast the last Friday of every month. As an audience member, you had better be ready to dress up, dance, and yell your way through the night. It’s a hilarious party that is worth the try!

New Years’ at Nathan Phillips Square

Head down to Nathan Phillips Square to ring in the New Year with fireworks and live music!

AGO First Thursday, ROM Friday Night Live & Ripley’s Friday Night Jazz all also run for part of the winter – check out my reviews here !

Songs for the week:
I’ll Never Fall in Love Again- Elvis Costello
Spiderwebs- No Doubt
I Ran- A Flock of Seagulls
